Changing your Channel of Interaction
Social media has provided an outlet for “soundbite communication” through sites such as Twitter. With email boxes constantly filling up with SPAM, you can use Twitter to tame the mess and focus with whom you are interacting. Setup a Twitter account that exclusively manages all your direct reports, key clients and trusted colleagues (the ones who don’t abuse your time and attention). Let these people know the best way to reach you is via “Twitter Direct Message”, and set your smartphone accordingly so that Twitter Direct Messages (but not other kinds of tweets) show up in real time, just like a text message. But make sure you “follow” them as well otherwise they would not be able to reach through private messaging. “Tweet” regularly keeping the tweets newsworthy. Share relevant links and reply back to your followers every now and then. This is a simple way to stay in the conversation no matter where you are.
